As told in Genesis, the Creator worked to create the universe in 6 days and rested on the seventh day. To remember the Sabbath and keep it holy, Jews are not permitted to ignite fire from sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday. Modern day restrictions include the use of electricity. Candles lit at sundown, usher in the Sabbath on Friday night, and replace electricity as we honor the creator who has given us life.
"Blessed are you, Creator of the Universe, who has commanded us to kindle the light of Shabbat."
